National Taiwan University formulates the Directives Governing the Subsidization in the Higher Education SPROUT Project—Study Abroad Program to cultivate its PhD students and post-doctoral fellows by encouraging them to conduct research abroad and thereby enhance their research capabilities, stay abreast of international academic trends, broaden their global research perspectives, and foster academic exchanges and collaborations between the University and international research institutions under the Higher Education SPROUT Project—Study Abroad Program.
※The institutions shall, in principle, be previously approved by the NSTC grant, and must be universities ranked among the top 20 in the world—in the relevant research area(s) of the applicant's or in terms of comprehensive evaluation—within the last 3 years, important national laboratories overseas, or world-class research and development units (or laboratories).

※The 2025 Applications for "Study Abroad Extension Subsidization for PhD Students" and "Study Abroad Subsidization for Post-Doctoral Fellows" should be submitted to ORD by June 2, 2025.
1)All colleges shall compile and submit the application documents (application forms and attachments from the applicants) to the ORD Office;
2)A description of the institution or, if any, a copy of the Memorandum of Understanding between the University (or the respective college) and the said institution as attachment; and
3)Application materials in accordance with Article 7 of the Directives Governing the NSTC PhD Students Study Abroad Program.
1)All colleges shall compile, review, and rank the applications before submitting them (list of applications with an order of recommendation priority as well as application forms and attachments from the applicants) to the Office;
2)Proof of approval for the NSTC PhD Students Study Abroad Program;
3)A description of the ranking of the institution or its significance/reputation and, if any, a copy of the Memorandum of Understanding between the University (or the respective college) and the said institution as attachment;
4)Application materials in accordance with Article 7 of the Directives Governing the NSTC PhD Students Study Abroad Program;
5)Letter of recommendation and consent form from the overseas advisor during the extension period;
6)Letter of recommendation and consent form from the NTU advisor during the extension period; and
7)Research proposal (including updated information on research progress, research results, publications) for the extension period.
1)All colleges or responsible top-level units shall compile, review, and rank the applications before submitting them (list of applications with an order of recommendation priority as well as application forms and attachments from the applicants) to the Office;
2)Copies of the approval and employment documents of the post-doctoral fellow appointed during the period of receiving the subsidy;
3)A description of the ranking of the institution and its significance/reputation and, if any, a copy of the Memorandum of Understanding between the University (or the respective college) and the said institution as attachment;
4)Letter of recommendation and consent form from the overseas advisor during the study abroad period;
5)Letter of recommendation and consent form from the NTU principal investigator during the study abroad period and, if any, a description of the international collaboration-related programs or grants received by the principal investigator as attachment; and
6)Research proposal (please specify the relevance between the proposed research and the employing PI's project) for the study abroad period.
1)Subsidy Amount: NT$525,000-NT$900,000 (tax-exempt) per recipient; the exact amount is to be determined in accordance with the review results.
2)Subsidization Period: 7 months to 1 year; the period may not be divided into multiple phases.
1)Subsidy Amount: Upon completion of the entire period of the NSTC PhD Students Study Abroad Program, the recipient shall receive an additional subsidy of up to NT$450,000 (tax-exempt) for up to 6 months of extension, with the exact amount depending on the length of the extended research period as well as the results of the review process.
2)Subsidization Period: Up to 6 months; the period may not be divided into multiple phases. In principle, the starting date of the subsidization shall ensue the ending date of the NSTC PhD Students Study Abroad Program.
1)Subsidy Amount: Up to NT$600,000 per recipient per application in principle, depending on the length of the study abroad period. In case of extraordinary circumstances, the applicant may attach documents of additional explanation and planning; however, the exact amount shall still depend on the results of the review process. In case the recipient's employment is interrupted during the subsidization period, the subsidy shall remain effective only until the expiration of the recipient's appointment, and may be resumed only upon the completion of procedures for the renewal or transfer of appointment; however, the resumed subsidization may not extend beyond the approved subsidy period.
2)Subsidization Period: Up to 1 year per application; the period may not be divided into multiple phases. In case the post-doctoral research employment is terminated during the subsidization period, the subsidy shall be returned pro rata based on the termination date of the recipient's appointment.
