Study Abroad Program

National Taiwan University encourages its Ph.D. students to conduct research work overseas so as to develop student research potential, increase understanding of international research trends, expand international research experience, and promote exchanges and cooperation between NTU and international research institutions. To this end, the NTU Higher Education SPROUT Project - Doctoral Student Overseas Research Grant Pilot Project (Study Abroad Program) has been implemented.

Application Schedule

The Office of Research and Development (ORD) announces the application period each year within two months following the announcement of the results for the NSTC Doctoral Students Overseas Research Grant Program.

The Applications should be submitted to ORD by January 31, 2023.

Grant Detail

A maximum of 50 students each school year may be awarded grants to conduct research work at research institutions overseas.

Eligible Applicants

Eligible applicants must fulfill the two following conditions

  1. NTU doctoral students who have passed the Ph.D. candidate qualifying exam.
  2. NTU doctoral students who submitted an application for the NSTC Doctoral Students Overseas Research Grant Program in the previous year and received the recommendation of the advisor, the department (graduate school or diploma program), and the college, but were not awarded grants by the NSTC Doctoral Student Overseas Research Grant Program.
Application Documents
  1. Application form filled out by the college.
  2. The information on the benchmark academic research institution or a copy of the MOU (memorandum of understanding).
  3. Students applying for overseas research must include documents specified in Article VII of Guidelines regarding the NSTC Doctoral Student Overseas Research Grant.
Amount and Duration of Grant
  1. The approved amount of grant depends on the review results and ranges between NT$525,000 to NT$900,000 per person (tax exempted).
  2. The period of grant support is seven months to one year. The grant may not be extended or paid out in separate durations. Each student may be awarded the grant only once during their doctoral study at NTU. 
  3. If the grant recipient has also received a grant awarded by the NTU Higher Education SPROUT Project’s Ph.D. direct-entry program (Program of Research Performance Enhancement via Students Entering Ph.D. Programs Straight from an Undergraduate/Master's Program), the NTU Ph.D. direct-entry program’s monthly payout per person (This amount includes an NT$8,000 monthly payout made by the student’s affiliated college, department, center, diploma program, or project principal investigator) during the whole period of the student’s overseas research work. For a period of less than a month, an amount will be paid out on a pro rata basis.
